The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) of the EU entered into full operation in 2026 and is fundamentally changing the conditions for importing selected commodities into the European Union. Its aim is to prevent carbon leakage outside the EU and to level the playing field between European producers participating in the EU ETS system and importers from third countries. CBAM currently applies in particular to sectors with high carbon intensity.
